Article: What Happens When You Drink Cacao for a Month?

What Happens When You Drink Cacao for a Month?

What Happens When You Drink Cacao for a Month?

Not overnight.
Not after one cup.
But after a month?

That’s when things start to get interesting.

I’m not here to tell you that drinking cacao every day for a month will magically change your life. I’m not going to promise glowing skin, perfect relationships, endless energy or instant enlightenment.

That’s not how I roll.

What I am going to tell you is this:
A month is long enough to build a beautiful habit.
Long enough to become curious. Long enough to slow down.
Long enough to discover what this extraordinary food has to offer you.

Because here’s the thing. At Mamamuti, I’m not interested in telling you how cacao should make you feel. I don’t want to give you another set of rules or convince you that there is only one correct way to prepare it, drink it or experience it.

I want you to discover your own relationship with cacao. I want you to become your own little experiment. Make yourself a cup every day for a month and pay attention.

Notice how you feel.
Notice what you enjoy.
Notice whether you begin craving the pause as much as the cacao itself.

One cup may not tell you very much. But thirty cups begin to tell a story.

Week One: You’re Creating a Ritual

The first week isn’t really about cacao.

It’s about creating space.
Space to stand at the stove.
Space to whisk.
Space to watch your cacao gently bubble.
Space to breathe in that rich chocolate aroma before the rest of life comes charging in.

You begin learning how you like it. Perhaps you prefer it thick and dark. Perhaps you love it creamy.

Maybe you add a pinch of salt and suddenly realise what you’ve been missing all your life. Maybe you drink it from your favourite mug, wrapped in a blanket, while the rain hits the windows. There is something deeply nourishing about preparing food with your own hands.

You aren’t pressing a button and rushing away.
You’re stirring.
Smelling.
Tasting.
Waiting.

You’re participating in the experience.

Those few quiet minutes may become just as nourishing as what’s inside your cup. And beneath all of that pleasure, something else is happening.

You’re also feeding your body with one of the most fascinating and nutrient-rich foods on Earth.

Cacao contains magnesium, iron, fibre, cacao butter and flavanol polyphenols. It also contains naturally occurring compounds including theobromine, phenylethylamine, better known as PEA, tryptophan, tryptamine and anandamide.

That’s quite a lot going on inside one delicious cup of goodness. And over the next few weeks, as cacao becomes part of your rhythm, you may begin to notice why this food has been loved for such a very long time.

Week Two: Your Body Starts Saying Thank You

By the second week, something begins to shift.

You’re no longer just drinking cacao.
You’re nourishing yourself with one of the most extraordinary whole foods on the planet.

I don’t think we talk enough about just how remarkable cacao really is. Inside every cup are hundreds of naturally occurring compounds that work together in ways we’re still discovering.

Nature rarely works with just one magic ingredient. Instead, she creates beautiful little symphonies, where every mineral, every plant compound and every healthy fat plays its own part. Let’s meet a few of the stars of the show.

Magnesium - The Nervous System Whisperer
Life asks a lot of us. Our nervous systems are constantly switched on. We’re juggling work, families, relationships, responsibilities, phones that never stop buzzing and minds that rarely get a chance to rest.

Cacao is naturally super rich in magnesium, a mineral involved in hundreds of processes throughout the body, including healthy muscle function, nerve signalling and energy production.

People often ask me when I drink my cacao. The answer usually surprises them. I drink mine in the evening.

For me, making cacao is how I close the day. Standing at the stove. Whisking slowly. Watching the cacao gently bubble. Breathing in that rich chocolate aroma. Listening to my favourite song. Swaying my hips from side to side. It’s my way of telling my nervous system, “You can soften now.”

Is that only because of the magnesium? Probably not. It’s also because I’ve created a ritual that tells my body it’s safe to slow down. And it’s safe to just be. Sometimes nourishment isn’t just about what we eat. It’s also about how we receive it.

Iron - Quiet Strength
Iron is one of my favourite nutrients to talk about. It helps carry oxygen around the body and supports healthy energy production. For female bodies especially, cacao is a beautiful food to include because it’s naturally rich in iron.

Whether you’re in your twenties, navigating perimenopause or well beyond menopause, your body still relies on this incredible mineral every single day. And for all of us, iron contributes to reducing tiredness and fatigue while supporting healthy red blood cells.

I like to think of iron as backbone. Not loud energy. Not frantic energy. Just quiet, grounded strength that helps you keep showing up.

Theobromine - Coffee’s Gentler Cousin
One of the biggest surprises for many people is learning that cacao isn’t really about caffeine, even tho it contains teeny tiny traces of it. Its primary natural stimulant is called theobromine.

Think of theobromine as coffee’s gentler cousin. They’re related, but they behave very differently.

Where coffee often arrives with a bang, theobromine tends to unfold more gently. Many people experience a smoother, steadier lift without the jitters or sudden crash that coffee can sometimes bring.

Theobromine has also been studied for the way it helps relax blood vessels and supports healthy circulation, making it one of cacao’s most fascinating natural compounds. For me, it feels less like someone flicking on a bright light… …and more like watching the sun slowly rise.

PEA - The Love Molecule
Have you ever heard people talk about the “love molecule”? They’re talking about phenylethylamine, or PEA. Our bodies naturally produce it when we’re excited, inspired or falling in love. Cacao contains small amounts of this remarkable compound too.

Is cacao a love potion? No. But I do think it has an extraordinary way of inviting us back into ourselves. To slow down. To soften. To savour. And perhaps that’s why so many people associate cacao with feelings of connection, and openness.

Tryptophan & Tryptamine - Tiny Compounds with Big Stories
Cacao also contains naturally occurring tryptophan, an amino acid your body uses to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood and emotional wellbeing.

It also contains tiny amounts of tryptamine and many other fascinating plant compounds that researchers continue to study. The truth is, we’re still learning. And I love that. Nature still has mysteries.

Polyphenols - Your Body’s Little Comfy Blankie
If there is one reason I encourage people to enjoy cacao regularly, it’s this. Cacao is one of the richest natural food sources of flavanol polyphenols.

I don’t think of polyphenols as antioxidants. I think of them as little protectors. I imagine them wrapping a soft, comfy blankie around every cell in my body. Quietly looking after me. Quietly protecting me from the wear and tear that life throws our way. Not making a fuss. Just getting on with the job.

That’s how I think about cacao. Not as a miracle cure. Simply as one of those beautiful foods that keeps showing up for you, cup after cup, day after day. Like a little daily insurance policy for your future self.

And perhaps that’s one of the reasons I keep coming back to it. Not because I expect perfection. But because I know it’s quietly looking after me while I get on with living my life.

Week Three: You Stop Following the Rules

This is one of my favourite weeks. Not because anything dramatic happens. But because this is usually the point where people stop asking me how they’re supposed to drink their cacao. Instead, they start asking themselves.

You begin trusting your own taste buds. You stop measuring everything so carefully. You stop wondering whether you’re making it “properly.” Maybe you discover that a pinch of salt transforms the flavour. Maybe orange zest becomes your new obsession. Or cardamom. Or a tiny pinch of chilli.

You begin playing. Experimenting. Following your curiosity instead of someone else’s rule book. And honestly? I think that’s one of the greatest gifts cacao has to offer.

Over the years I’ve watched the cacao world become filled with rules. Don’t heat it too much. Only drink it at this time of day. Only prepare it this way. Only buy this type. Only use this water. Only use this cup.

It’s exhausting. And I don’t think that’s what cacao was ever meant to be.

At Mamamuti, you’ll hear me say this often: Curiosity is far more powerful than dogma.

I don’t want you borrowing someone else’s experience. I want you discovering your own.

Taste.
Notice.
Experiment.

Maybe you’ll realise you love your cacao rich and dark. Maybe you’ll discover that adding a splash more milk makes it absolutely perfect. Maybe you’ll decide you love it hot. Or iced.

There isn’t a right way. There’s only your way. And that’s a really beautiful thing.

Week Four: It Becomes Part of Your Life

By now, making cacao isn’t something you have to remember to do. It’s simply part of your rhythm. Like watering the garden. Walking the dog. Lighting a candle. Reading before bed.

It becomes a quiet act of self-care that asks for almost nothing, yet gives so much in return. Some evenings you might notice you feel calmer. Other days you might feel more focused. Sometimes you’ll simply realise you’ve spent ten minutes without looking at your phone.

And perhaps that’s the greatest gift of all. Not that cacao changed you. But that it helped you slow down long enough to reconnect with yourself.

Cacao Doesn’t Discriminate

People often ask me, “Is cacao better for women?” Or, “Is it better for men?” My answer is always the same. Cacao is food. Beautiful, ancient, nourishing food.

It doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t care how old you are. It doesn’t care whether you’re a woman or a man. It simply offers what it has to offer.

I’ve watched children fall in love with cacao. I’ve watched teenagers discover it. I’ve watched grandparents sip it with enormous smiles on their faces. I’ve watched athletes enjoy it. I’ve watched artists, business owners, gardeners, surfers, nurses and retirees all find joy in the same humble cup. Because cacao belongs to everyone.

It has for thousands of years. And I hope it always will. To me, cacao doesn’t ask anything from us. It simply loves us up. And I think the world could do with a little more of that.

So… What Happens When You Drink Cacao for a Month?

Maybe nothing dramatic. Maybe everything changes. Perhaps not because cacao transformed you… …but because, for one month, you chose yourself.

You chose to slow down. You chose to stand at the stove instead of rushing through another day. You chose to nourish your body with one of the most extraordinary whole foods on Earth. You chose minerals that support your body.

Healthy fats that satisfy. Fibre that nourishes. Polyphenols that quietly look after your cells. Theobromine that offers a gentle lift. PEA, tryptophan and countless other naturally occurring plant compounds that remind us just how incredibly intelligent nature really is.

And perhaps, most importantly… You chose pleasure. Not the kind of pleasure that’s loud or extravagant. The quiet kind. The kind that comes from wrapping your hands around a warm mug.

From watching your cacao gently bubble on the stove. From taking that first sip and feeling your shoulders soften. From realising that looking after yourself doesn’t always have to be complicated. Sometimes it can be as simple as making a beautiful cup of cacao.

A Little Invitation from Me to You

If you’ve never tried drinking cacao consistently before, I’d love to invite you to become your own little experiment. Not because I want to prove anything. And certainly not because I think cacao is a miracle cure.

Simply because I’m curious. I’m curious what might happen if, for one month, you gave yourself permission to pause.

To nourish yourself.
To breathe.
To pay attention.

Maybe you’ll discover your favourite recipe. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with orange zest or cardamom. Maybe you’ll find yourself reaching for cacao instead of another coffee. Maybe you’ll simply fall in love with the ritual.

There are no rules. There are no expectations. There is no “right” way. Just one beautiful cup at a time.

One Last Thing…

If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this article, it’s this: Don’t let anyone tell you how you’re supposed to experience cacao. Not me. Not social media. Not the wellness industry. Be curious. Ask questions. Experiment. Trust your senses. Your relationship with cacao is yours alone. And I think that’s something worth protecting.

At Mamamuti, my mission has never been to create followers. It’s been to help people feel confident enough to trust themselves. Because when we stop chasing perfection… When we stop collecting rules… When we slow down long enough to truly taste what’s in front of us… Something beautiful happens.

We remember that nourishment can be joyful. That pleasure belongs at the table. And that some of life’s greatest moments arrive not with fireworks… …but with a saucepan on the stove, a whisk in your hand, and the rich aroma of cacao filling your home.

So here’s my invitation. Make yourself a cup every day for a month. Not because I told you to. But because I’m genuinely curious to see what happens when you give yourself thirty days of nourishment, curiosity, and one extraordinary food that has been quietly looking after humanity for thousands of years. If you do, I’d love to hear your story.

With love, Irma x
