Article: What Makes Mamamuti So Special?

What Makes Mamamuti So Special?

What Makes Mamamuti So Special?

It’s a question I get asked often.

With so many cacao brands now available, what makes Mamamuti different?

The truth is, it isn’t just one thing.

It isn’t simply that our cacao tastes incredible (although I genuinely believe it does).

It isn’t just that we source directly from small Pacific Island farming communities.
It isn’t even that I’ve spent more than twenty-five years studying natural health, nutrition and cacao.

What makes Mamamuti special is something much harder to package. It’s the intention behind every decision.

Mamamuti was never created to chase trends.

When I started Mamamuti in 2019, I wasn’t looking for the next wellness fad. I wasn’t trying to build a lifestyle brand or create another product to add to an already crowded market.

I simply wanted to reconnect people with one of the most extraordinary foods on Earth.

A food that has been misunderstood.
Overcomplicated. Commercialised. And, in many cases, disconnected from the very people who grow it.

Mamamuti exists because I believe food should tell a story.

When you hold one of our bags of cacao, you’re holding the work of farmers, families, forests, rainfall, volcanic soils and generations of knowledge.

That deserves our respect.

We know where our cacao comes from.

This matters.
A lot.

Our cacao comes from incredible farming communities in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. These aren’t anonymous commodities traded through endless middlemen.

These are real communities.
Real people.
Real relationships.

Over the years I’ve walked through the cacao forests.

I’ve sat with the farmers. I’ve seen the way cacao grows beneath towering rainforest trees, surrounded by birdsong, tropical fruit and rich living soil.

I’ve seen the smiles.
I’ve seen the hard work.
I’ve seen the pride.

Those experiences changed me forever. Every cup of Mamamuti cacao connects us to those communities.

I never want to lose sight of that

Quality starts long before the bean reaches New Zealand.

People often ask me why Mamamuti tastes different. The answer starts at origin. Great cacao can’t be manufactured in a factory.

It begins with healthy trees.
Healthy soil.
Careful harvesting.
Thoughtful fermentation.
Slow drying.
Skilful roasting.

Every step matters.

By the time our cacao reaches your kitchen, an enormous amount of care has already gone into creating something truly beautiful.

Our job is simply not to get in its way.

Education has always been part of our mission

One thing you’ll quickly notice about Mamamuti is that I ask a lot of questions.

I question trends.
I question wellness myths.
I question marketing.

Not because I enjoy being controversial.
But because I believe people deserve honest information.

Whether we’re talking about heating cacao, so-called “ceremonial” cacao, or whether there really is only one “right” way to prepare it, I think curiosity is far more valuable than dogma.

I don’t want people to become dependent on rules.

I want them to build confidence.
To trust themselves.
To discover their own relationship with cacao.

That’s far more empowering.

Pleasure is the purpose.

If you’ve been around Mamamuti for a while, you’ll know this little phrase.

Pleasure is the purpose.

It’s more than a slogan.
It’s become the philosophy that quietly guides this entire business.

Somewhere along the way, we’ve forgotten that nourishment should feel good. We’ve become so obsessed with optimising everything that we’ve forgotten to enjoy it.

Food isn’t meant to be feared.
It’s meant to be experienced.

I don’t drink cacao because I think it’ll magically solve all my problems. I drink it because it slows me down.

Because it invites me into my senses.
Because it reminds me to breathe.
Because it tastes extraordinary.
Because life feels richer with it.

Pleasure isn’t selfish.
It’s deeply human.

We choose transparency over perfection.

You’ll probably never hear me claim that our cacao is a miracle cure.

Or that it’s the only cacao worth drinking.
Or that there’s only one correct way to prepare it.

Life is more nuanced than that.

Instead, I’ll always do my best to share what I know, admit what I don’t know, and encourage you to stay curious.

I think honesty builds far more trust than perfection ever could.

Small by choice.

Mamamuti isn’t a giant corporation. It’s a small New Zealand business built with heart.

Every order still matters.
Every customer still matters.
Every email still matters.
Every conversation still matters.

That’s something I’ll never take for granted.

Growing the business has never been about becoming famous or building an empire. It’s about creating something meaningful.

If we can sell more cacao while supporting more farming families, educating more people, and helping more humans reconnect with pleasure, then everybody wins. That’s the kind of growth I’m interested in.

More than a cup of cacao.

When people buy Mamamuti, they’re not just buying cacao.

They’re supporting ethical relationships with Pacific Island growers.
They’re choosing quality over shortcuts.
They’re choosing curiosity over dogma.
They’re choosing transparency over marketing hype. And perhaps, without even realising it, they’re choosing to slow down for a few moments each day.

To breathe.
To savour.
To remember that nourishment doesn’t have to be complicated.

Sometimes it can be as simple as standing at the stove, watching your cacao gently bubble, breathing in that rich chocolate aroma, and taking the first sip with gratitude.

That, to me, is what Mamamuti has always been about. Not selling more cacao. Helping people fall in love with it. And in doing so, perhaps helping them fall a little more in love with life itself.

Can We Please Stop Being Afraid of Heating Cacao

Can We Please Stop Being Afraid of Heating Cacao

One of the biggest fears I see in the cacao world is this idea that you shouldn’t let your cacao get too hot. Don’t let it bubble. Don’t heat it above a certain temperature. Or you’ll “destroy all ...
