What Happens When You Stop Drinking Cacao?
First of all…
Why?
😂
No, really.
I’m genuinely curious.
Did you lose a bet?
Has somebody hidden your saucepan?
Did you accidentally run out?
Because voluntarily stopping cacao seems like a very strange life choice.
Obviously, I’m joking.
Kind of.
The truth is, nothing terrible is going to happen if you stop drinking cacao. You’re not going to wake up a completely different person. You’re not going to forget who you are.
And despite what the wellness world sometimes suggests, cacao isn’t something you should become dependent on.
But…
If you’ve been enjoying cacao regularly, there are a few things you might notice when it quietly disappears from your routine.
You might miss the ritual more than the cacao.
This one surprises people.
Most of us think we’re attached to what’s in the mug.
Often, we’re actually attached to everything around it.
Standing at the stove.
Whisking.
Watching the cacao gently bubble.
Breathing in that rich chocolate aroma.
Wrapping your hands around a warm mug.
Taking ten uninterrupted minutes for yourself.
That’s not just a drink.
That’s a ritual.
And rituals have a funny way of becoming little anchors in our lives.
Your kitchen might become a little less exciting.
No more debating whether today is an orange zest day.
Or a cardamom day.
Or perhaps a cheeky pinch of chilli.
No more experimenting.
No more licking the whisk.
No more pretending you’re only making one cup while secretly making enough for two.
Life goes on…
But the kitchen loses a little sparkle.
You might drink something else instead.
Maybe coffee.
Maybe tea.
Maybe nothing at all.
And that’s completely okay.
The goal has never been to replace one habit with another.
The goal has always been to become more intentional about what you’re choosing.
Your body won’t forget how to be healthy.
Let’s clear something up.
Cacao isn’t a miracle cure.
It’s food.
Beautiful, nourishing, ancient food.
If you stop drinking it, your body doesn’t suddenly fall apart.
But you may be eating a little less magnesium.
A little less iron.
A few less flavanol polyphenols.
A little less fibre.
One less source of theobromine.
One less excuse to slow down.
That’s worth thinking about.
You might realise it was never really about the nutrients.
This is my favourite part.
Because after a few days, or maybe a few weeks, you might find yourself thinking…
“I actually miss making cacao.”
Not because you’re craving chocolate.
But because you miss the pause.
The ceremony…
Actually… let’s not call it a ceremony.
Let’s call it what it is.
A moment.
A moment where life slowed down.
A moment where your phone stayed on the bench.
A moment where you chose yourself.
And perhaps that’s what you miss most.
Good news.
Cacao doesn’t hold grudges.
It doesn’t care if you’ve been away for a week.
Or a month.
Or a year.
It’ll welcome you back with exactly the same generosity.
No guilt.
No judgement.
Just, “Hey… kettle’s on?”
Well…
Actually, not the kettle.
At Mamamuti, we’re Team Saucepan.
The Bottom Line
If you stop drinking cacao, you’ll probably be absolutely fine.
But life might become just a tiny bit less delicious.
A tiny bit less playful.
A tiny bit less intentional.
Because cacao has this beautiful way of reminding us to pause.
To nourish ourselves.
To notice.
To enjoy.
And in a world that’s constantly asking us to move faster…
I reckon that’s something worth holding onto.
So if you’ve accidentally found yourself reading this with an empty cacao cup…
You know what to do.
Pop the saucepan on.
Whisk until it’s silky.
Wait for those first little bubbles.
Take a deep breath.
And welcome yourself home.
After all…
Life happens.
Cacao helps.
With all my heart
